The Doctor Who Fan Orchestra invites musical fans of Doctor Who to take part in an online collaborative celebration of Murray Gold’s music. Participants submitted recordings for this work from November 2011 to January 2012.

This final mix includes a total of 177 submissions from 154 individual participants, ranging in age from 11 to 57, and who are located in at least 18 different countries across the world, including: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Spain, France, Russia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Hong Kong, Israel, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland.

Re-reblogging, I don’t even care, this is amazing.  How many of you have listened to the Complete Symphonic Recording of Les Mis?  How many of you have noticed that it sounds… weird, wooden, disjointed, like the actors aren’t even in the same show and everyone’s singing to a backing track?  That’s because it’s true: most of them had never even met face-to-face; they were singing in various studios around the world.  The effect is audible, even though there are only nine principal actors and all the orchestra members are together in the same studio.  Even though everyone involved is not just a professional, but a professional at the top of their field.

And this—an orchestra.  Often playing in unison, which under these circumstances is way harder to do smoothly than everyone on separate parts.  177 submissions.  A pack of amateurs.  Overenthusiastic geeks.  High school kids.  More passion than expertise.  Scattered around the world, no way to cohere with the other musicians in realtime, no conductor to watch, just sitting there in their living rooms and basements with their headphones in, praying they’ll be in tune and in time with everyone else.

And this is what happens.

You guys, this is beautiful.  Fandom is beautiful.  Just—just stand there, okay?  ‘Cause I’m gonna hug you.

Not gonna lie, this actually made me cry because it’s so delightful.

Oh. Oh WOW. This is truly impressive.
